Air Fryer Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an air fryer?

There are two types of Air fryer available, basket or drawer type and Oven type air-fryers.

A Vortex air fryer is a revolutionary appliance using hot air to drive heat around an oven cavity/ drawer, driven by a powerful circulating fan. This provides a speedy, healthier cooking method than either a deep fat fryer or oven roasting as far less fat is used.

Oven type air fryers

An Air fryer oven is a larger, multi- functional appliance, resembling an oven, but with faster cooking times. They take up more space than basket type air fryers and the food is cooked on two shelves.

I personally prefer the vortex type of Air-fryer and will discuss this appliance here.

Why buy an Air-fryer?

Efficiency

Air fryers are high powered mini fan ovens that are speedy to reach temperature, require less energy and cook faster than normal domestic ovens.

Speedy cooking

Air fryers cook most foods pretty fast. A jacket potato, or 3 can be cooked to perfection in 45 minutes, as opposed to 1 hour 20 in a conventional oven.

Versatility

An amazing variety of foods can be cooked in the Air-fryer from blueberry muffins to breakfast pancakes, to an omelette or a cheese toastie for lunch or a roast dinner. You can also bake a pizza, cook hard boiled eggs, or make delicious cheese scones.

Cleanliness

The drawer and cooking plate should be washed after each use.  I prefer to use the sink and hot soapy water plus washing up brush.  However most drawers and cooking plates are dishwasher safe.  Check with your particular manufacturer. Make use of air-fryer liners, either disposable paper ones or re-usable silicone to help to keep drawer clean.  The interior of the Air-fryer plus element need to be cleaned about once a week, dependant on usage.

Healthy cooking

Use only about a tablespoon sunflower oil to cook food in your air-fryer, shaking or turning food frequently for even, crispy cooking. Remember, do not over- load basket, cooking in batches, if necessary.

Do I need addtional equipment for my air fryer?

Spray bottles

Buy a spray bottle and fill it with sunflower oil.  Keep this near to your air-fryer for speedy spraying a little oil onto the food before, and sometimed during cooking.  About 6-8 sprays of oil sre normally sufficient.

Containers

Cooking some foods in containers is a good idea, as containers will help to keep the air-fryer clean.

You can use the same containers used in your conventional cooker, as long s they fit into the drawer, allowing air to circulate.  Think cake and flan tins, souffle dishes, metal and Pyrex.

Can I use foil in my air fryer?

Foil:

As long as manufacturer endorses it’s use foil is extremely useful.  It van be used to cook food in a parcel, as a lid when cooking rice, and foil trays are very useful.

Air fryer hints and tips

  1. Pre-heating the air-fryer takes only about 3 minutes.

  2. Don’t over-crowd the basket.  Air-frying food is quick, far better to cook in batches.  Cooked food may be returned to basket once last batch is cooked and will re-heat speedily to crisp perfection.

  3. An air-fryer is a high poered convection oven that can Roast, Grill, Bake, De-hydrate and cook from frozen.

  4. Cook similar foods together, such as butternut squash and carrots, adding quick to cook ingredients like tomatoes or sliced mushrooms towards end of cooking, works well in the air-fryer.
